The Burnout Cycle Nobody Talks About

If you have ADHD, burnout doesn’t always come from doing too little.

It often comes from doing too much.

The cycle looks like this:

Hyperfocus → Overcommit → Exhaustion → Shutdown → Shame → Restart

You say yes to everything.
You work late when inspiration hits.
You ride the dopamine wave.

Then suddenly…

You crash.

Your motivation disappears.
You avoid emails.
You cancel plans.
You feel like you’ve failed again.

This isn’t a character flaw.

It’s a nervous system pattern.

Why It Happens

ADHD brains are dopamine-driven.

When something feels stimulating, you can go all in.

But when dopamine drops, energy drops with it.

Without built-in regulation, you swing between extremes.

Breaking the Cycle

The solution isn’t less ambition.

It’s sustainable pacing.

Try:

  • Building rest into productive phases

  • Saying no earlier than feels comfortable

  • Tracking energy, not just tasks

  • Finishing before you’re completely drained

Consistency doesn’t come from intensity.

It comes from rhythm.

And rhythm can be learned.
